Guided Imagery

Guided Imagery can be an excellent tool for making positive changes in our lives, especially when combined with hypnotherapy models.

Guided imagery can have many different applications and definitions, depending on whom you ask. But the basic idea is that a facilitator uses your own imagination to bring up images, and then uses those images for some purpose.

Some people only used guided imagery for relaxation or Guided Meditation. Some people will use it for Guided Imagery Healing. Personally, I like to combine these methods and add in my client’s own images for getting results.

As an example, I was recently working with someone that was dealing with clutter. I asked to her to imagine looking around her home and tell me what she saw. In her mind she saw giant column posts made of marble. She told me that the marble seemed to represent what the clutter was in her life. It was almost as if the clutter were columns of her own status.

In reality these were just piles of paper stacked in her apartment, but the images gave us new insights into her issue. It was as if the piles of papers were there to symbolize her own importance to herself. By understanding what the clutter represented to her we were able to get directly to the real issue instead of working on the surface issue. No amount of “organization techniques” had worked for her in the past because the real issue was that she needed to feel important.

Another example of guided imagery that I’ll frequently use is to ask my client to imagine an image of someone that is successful and has overcome the same issue that she has. Then using hypnotherapy techniques I’ll guide her into a relaxed state of mind by asking her to imagine walking down a staircase. With each step down the staircase, you become more relaxed and begin stepping into that picture of success.

In this last example, we use her own image of “success” while I facilitate, or guide, the imagination. This is actually my own preferred way of using guided imagery, to use your own images while I guide you.

Some Guided Imagery practitioners will tell their clients what to imagine. This is often used in Guided Meditations and Guided Relaxation exercises. I like to use this approach initially when helping a client to ease into a relaxed state or when building a metaphor.

A short definition of a metaphor is a symbolic story that I’ll use to help the client to see the issue and solution that she may not be able to see if I directly told her what the answer was. By following the story in her imagination she comes to see the conclusion for herself and is then able to apply it during her normal daily activities.

By using an approach to guided imagery that uses hypnosis techniques we can make use of our magnificent imagination and make positive changes our lives.
